  05/05/2022 BEV? HYBRID? PHEV? A Brief Explanation. A basic understanding (including clean car rebates). A BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) must be charged to get from A to B. This can be done by plugging in to a standard wall plug at home (although that method may take quite a while) or with a fast-charger. A Hybrid vehicle has an electric motor plus a petrol or diesel engine. Fill up at a fuel station and the petrol or diesel engine charges the battery. When there's enough charge, the car runs off the electric motor. A PHEV vehicle (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has an electric motor plus a petrol or diesel engine. Fill up at a fuel station. To charge the battery, plug in like an EV. When it runs out of battery power it automatically switches to the petrol or diesel engine. Examples below.
